HAPPY NEW YEAR, DEAR COUSINS!

I wish for all my wonderful, funny and sweet cousins - 1st, once removed, 2nd and so forth - I love all of you. It's my blessing to have you in my life. When I hear of people who are constantly fighting with their relatives - that is so far from my comprehension. Munnie & Papa did something wonderful when they instilled "family love" into our parents and grandparents. I do believe we must be some of the luckiest people in the world!! Even being so far from all of you, this blog and e-mail and Facebook has made us closer. Make this new year and blessed one -- and as I say on FB -- smile alot, hug alot and for goodness sake - eat some chocolate. I love you all, Jody the Elder!!

As Mom already told ya, we are settling into the new house. Buster has missed the whole darn thing. He is still on location, and has been since before Thanksgiving. He was lucky. The kids and I did the moving during a blizzard last weekend and this weekend was spent unpacking more. Lord, how did we have so much stuff in that tiny apartment? LOL.

JODY THE ELDER IS BACK IN BUSINESS!!!!

Hi Cousins!!! Lordy, is good to be back on the blog!!!! I got my new laptop Wednesday but we have been a little busy (HA!!!!) and I am just now getting back. I've missed so much - HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my Wade!!! I'm glad you & Celeste got to be together. Candy, glad you & Suzy had a good time together. I hope she'll catch me up on Judy. We also got the tv hooked up on the big wall that Keri & the kids painted. Lord, I think I can count the nosehairs the thing is so big!!! We got the Christmas tree up and it looks wonderful - Keri will do some pics later oh, I can take pics on my phone too but she'll have to show me how to put them on.(It only took me two years to learn how to "cut & paste"!!) Still no landline telephone but it's hooked up so Keri will get on to them on Monday. My bedroom is almost where I want it but it's very cozy (read small) but that's ok but I need my bookcases and bot (books on tape). I haven't been downstairs since we moved in but when my legs feel stronger I'll go down & see the Kids Cave - they really enjoy it - and THE BUZZ has figured out the stairs. But he still likes to sleep with his Mimi!! We had 13" of snow yesterday! I didn't work today because we couldn't get the pickup out of the driveway but will go tomorrow if we don't have anymore tonight. Don't know how WalMart will take this but if they can't - well, I'll just have to quit -- don't want to because I really enjoy it but I'm so afraid of falling on ice that I don't like to have to get out. Hopefully it will turn out ok, I've followed all the rules and really they can't afford to lose anyone - we need a lot of workers. Anyway, say a prayer for me. I love all of you and have really missed giving you all the wisdom of my ideas (lol). Let me hear from you!!! Much love, Jody

Happy Birthday to Wade, Part 2

Candy already brought up the subject, but I just could not let the opportunity pass to say another Happy Birthday wish to my brother. Being just one year and two weeks apart, we have always been very, very close and Wade has always been my best friend, my teacher, my protector and my hero. When he wasn't picking on me, of course. Yes, there was a little bit of that as there is with all siblings - I'm sure I picked on him, too, but when ever it came to crunch time, he has always been there for me and that is something that cannot be measured. We were able to get together yesterday to celebrate his birthday by meeting up in Salado for lunch at the historic Stagecoach Inn. The meal was delicious and while we didn't have birthday cake, we had a most wonderful chocolate pecan pie! Yes, after that we had to walk around a while and enjoy all the little gift shops. In my life I cannot ever imagine anyone having a more wonderful person for a brother. He is the best!!

Lucky Me

Suzy's friend Judy was in the hospital in Wichita Falls this week and Suzy got to stay with me. We had the best time, sitting by the fire, watching Miss Marple and either knitting or crocheting. She improved my stitch so that I can make a pretty scarf now. We are starting our own "stitch and bitch" group. You may all join us, but bring your own yarn.
Last night, Steve, Suzy and I picked up Hazel and Collie and went out to eat. Such fun.
I'm glad Judy is better, but I miss my Suzy.

Happy Birthday to John Dowdle

I've always thought that everyone's birthday should be a national holiday, but this year it really came true for Dad! Happy Birthday and Happy Thanksgiving to my hero!

One of my favorite photos of Dad in the Army could not be located for this post: Dad is holding a bazooka and wearing a helmet. Bill and I always liked that pic!

While we were living in Fort Worth, and I was maybe five or six years old, my parents hosted a neighborhood Halloween party at our house. Some neighborhood teenagers turned Bill Dan's room into the "Ghost House," complete with a dummy of the devil lying on the bed; my room was the fortune teller's place, and a girl was dressed as a gypsy to tell your fortune. While a neighbor boy and I were in the Ghost House, and about to "feel the devil's brains" (aka jello), we heard a scratching at the window. Well, this kid and I could not get out of there fast enough! We about ran into Dad, who it turns out, was outside rigging a paperclip to the screen to "enhance the Ghost House experience"! That was 5o years ago, and I'm still tainted!

I remember going to Texas Tech games from childhood to adulthood; I was with Dad at the SMU-Tech game (in the 80's) that Tech (we thought) had won from top-ranked SMU. SMU took a punt or kickoff from us; Dad was sitting down putting his binoculars away and blessedly missed the return for a SMU TD and victory. Later at supper he could only say, "Stick a fork in me; I'm done."

NEW HOUSE !!!!! And Happy Birthday Madison Catherine Boda!

After a very, very, very, v-e-r-y long time, the Boda/Leming clan has just closed on a house!!!
We don't have photos at the moment, but we will soon. It's a four bedroom, two bath house with a nice sized dining room, a huge living room and a small livingroom downstairs for the kids to share. They'll kinda have their own 'apartment' with a livingroom in the middle and a bedroom on each side. We also have something that is hard to come by in ND, an attached two car garage! No idea when we'll move in, because we want to paint the living room and Buster is on location and will be for a long time, so we are doing this all by ourselves! EEK!
Anyway, we're excited, glad that is over and we are anxious to get going on making the place 'ours'.
We'll send you our address when it's getting close to moving time.  
Madison got a house for her birthday...no lie! We also gave her an Nintendo DS (a red one) and some games. Mom and I took our relator, Linda out to AppleBee's to celebrate Mad's bday and to say WHOOOHOO about the house. We had a great time. Buster got to come home for an hour to see Madison and watch her open her gifts. Here's some pics:

Yes, that's plural! Just noticed that yesterday was Mark's birthday - so a belated one to you, Mark. I hope it was fun! Today is Madison's birthday and Keri mentioned on the facebook site that she is turning 13! Wow! A teenager! Knowing her mom and grandmom, I'm guessing the obvious - there will be cake! Hope it's a great day!

catching up with the cousins

Since I'm a captive in my own home for awhile, I'm trying to catch up with things I've neglected---one of them is staying in touch! I had foot surgery last Friday to repair and rebuild two painful arthritic joints. The artiritis had caused a stress fracture, so I've been wearing a boot for about a month. Once the fracture was healed, I was able to have the surgery on my joints. It was day surgery, and now I can't put any weight on my foot until I get the stitches out next Wednesday. Then I'll have a boot again for about 6 more weeks. Getting old is not for sissies!

I'll have to share a couple of pics of my beautiful granddaughter Maci. She's six months old now, and we're thoroughly enjoying her.

It's dead.....so if ya wanna talk to her, give her a call when you have time. If you need her to, she'll return your call since we have unlimited long distance and we wouldn't want you to run up a high phone bill. LOL!

For that matter, anytime anyone has time, do that,otherwise, we are in our 'fog' and not paying attention that we haven't called anyone!

World Series

Ya'll,
Steve and I are heading to Arlington to watch the Rangers in their first ever World Series!!! Words cannot express how excited we are...but let me try. We will be sitting up from first base in the third level. We will be able to see the Jumbo Tron (how out-dated) and catch foul balls.

Happy Birthday, Michael Wade!

Happy Birthday to my sweet son, Michael Wade! Yes, I've even called him by his middle name even when I wasn't yelling at him when he was little, so I think he'll forgive me for using it here. I think its another one of those " family" things. It's hard for me to think of Bill Dowdle without thinking Bill Dan, but I digress. Many times when he was little and I struggled to figure out how to go about being a new mom, I thought about the first child being somewhat of an experimental model and wished I'd had some practice on someone else's kid, but some how, some where along the line it must have been okay and my worries for nothing because in spite of my inexperience, it turned out all right. My experiments worked, for today I am the proud mom of a wonderful, generous, loving and kind young man who has exceeded all my expectations and trepidations about those first teeth, first steps, first grade, first date, first car and all those other mothers' scary moments. We won't go into first race, but at least by that time, I was an old hand at all this mothering stuff, although my heart still skips when I think of it. Before I continue to ramble on and on, I'll shorten this to say again - Happy Birthday, Michael, and thank you for being you. Oh, yeah, and there will be cake!! Sherami and I will be making one shortly, but the ice cream will have to be store bought.

Send Prayers and Love to the Brazeels

Yesterday I attended Mark Brazeel's memorial service. Martha Ann and Ronnie Thetford were there, and I got to see Jimmy and Marcie. There were a good many people there, including many members of the Fire Department, the Fire Chief being among them.

The service was unlike any I have ever attended, and that is not a bad thing. The preacher was very good, and "told it like it is," having been encouraged to do so by Suzy, Boyd, and Valerie.

He pointed out that when we make what we may regard as "personal choices" for ourselves, there are never any totally personal choices; what we do affects those we love. As Pastor Wells, pointed out, "just look at this heartbroken family on the front row."

We do take solace in the fact that Mark had accepted Christ as his personal Savior; that was the best choice he or any of us could ever make.

Pastor Wells requested that we do two things: Pray for Suzy & Boyd, Valerie & Emma, Phil, Sherry, Kaylee, & Marisa. And stay in contact with them: call on the phone, shoot out an email, text a message.

The preacher wrote a poem for Mark, and he said that we could post it:

"Mark - A Life That Could Have Been" by Ken Wells

"A young man with a future as bright as the stars,

With grit and determination that would take him far.

A hope and a promise that life would be grand,

The world and its power in the palm of his hand.

"With love and support that no one could doubt,

Owen's idea of birth

Rachel had to go to the doctor today for weekly check-up. All is well and Baby Isla will be about 7.5 pounds whenever she decides to make an appearance.

Rachel took her suitcase with her since she was going into OKC. That way if she needed it, she didn't have to drive back to Choctaw. Owen saw the suitcase and said, "Whatcha doing?" She said, "taking my suitcase to the car." He said, "Is Baby Isla knocking?" Isn't that great?

Mark Brazeel's Memorial Service

I saw on Suzy's Facebook posting that Mark's memorial service will be on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 3:00 PM, at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home, 740 S. Edmonds, Lewisville, TX, with visitation following in the chapel.

Sad News

Dear Cousins,

Suzy Brazeel's friend Judy just called me to tell me that Suzy's and Boyd's son Mark passed away this morning.

Mom and I are about to begin placing calls to various cousins, but I thought I would go ahead and post this so hopefully everyone is notified.

Boyd and Suzy were in Graham this weekend; Valerie, Mark's wife, went to church and when she returned home, she found Mark. Her daughter Emma had spent the night with a friend, and so was not home.

The cause is an apparent overdose. Mark has been battling health and pain issues for many years.

Tentatively, they hope services may be on Wednesday at their church in Lewisville, with burial in Graham. Of course I will let you know whenever I know.

Please lift them up in your prayers; "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1

A Tribute to Some Very Special People

Happy Birthday, Collie/Zorro/Colliewobbles!

September is a special month in our family -- it's sweet and bittersweet.

Collie, Pat, and Dan all had birthdays in September,

and Aunt Sue went home in September.

I remember writing on the chalkboard in Granny's kitchen; when I would return many weeks later, my message would have a large "Z" chalked over it! Zorro had been there!!

Mom has told me countless stories about growing up with Collie; she idolizes him to this day! Surely my brother's love of critters and pets proves the genetic link with Collie!

It's difficult to picture our "be sweet like me" Uncle Dan

as a Marine Drill Sergeant!

To me, he was the sweetest uncle.

During one of the many fun-filled times I spent the night at Candy's and Susan's, I got homesick and started crying at bedtime. Uncle Dan rocked me until I was calmer, and Aunt Sue let Susan put a record on the record player in her room so we could listen while we went to sleep. (Susan told me later that Aunt Sue NEVER let them play music during bedtime!! You're welcome, Susan, for that nighttime musical interlude!)

Aunt Pat was such fun!

Once when I was visiting, she and Keri and I played board games and card games.

We rolled up pieces of paper, and stuck them in our mouths like we were smoking cigars!

Aunt Pat wore a visor, and looked like a Las Vegas card dealer.

Two favorite stories about Aunt Pat came to me via Mom; when Mom was growing up, Aunt Pat was driving and bought Mom a double-dipped ice cream cone. She asked Mom is she could have a bite, and Mom agreed. Then Aunt Pat promptly leaned over and took the entire top scoop!

When Mom was in high school, and Granddaddy thought she was wearing too much lipstick, he would get Aunt Pat to try to straighten Mom out. Once Aunt Pat told Mom, "I wish you'd straighten up so Daddy won't keep making me talk to you!"

During another wonderful visit to Wichita Falls (Bill and I and Candy and Susan spent time each summer at each other's homes; WONDERFUL SUMMERS!), Aunt Sue and Uncle Dan took the four kids to Funland Amusement Park. I LOVED (past tense) the Tilt-A-Whirl, and proceeded to ride it six -- count 'em -- six times in a row! After the sixth ride, I staggered off the ride and promptly threw up. Aunt Sue, totally nonplussed, said, "Well, I guess five times is her limit."

Eden and Zach in North Dakota

Eden and Zach arrived on Sunday and we've had such fun getting to know Zach and seeing Eden after not seeing her for a year. She is beautiful as always and Zach is adorable. They are so cute together.

 I took them on a tour of downtown Williston today and bought Eden a few things. Today is her 20th(!) birthday and so she found some goodies she wanted.

We have some really neat shops downtown and we had a good time. When we got home, I started my homemade enchiladas and rice, and Eden got these from her Daddy.....

We ate way too much food and cake and then we gave her some more presents......she got a sweet card and gift from her Mimi and Aunt Bula and Uncle John, Madison wrote her a beautiful song and I typed it up for her and Eden can frame it. She wrote it when she found out Eden was engaged. Here it is in it's entirety:

After that, she and Madison both cried and then hugged and we had a nice evening laughing and being silly. Tomorrow, we are taking them to The Powder Keg Pizza Place for supper. The BEST pizza EVER. Not kidding.

Oh, if anyone missed it, (LOL) last weekend, I woke up with a HORRIBLE abscessed tooth. HORRIBLE! I was in awful pain for two days, but my honey found a dentist who took me in and gave me some wonderful drugs. I have to share the photo Mom took of me before our trip to the dentist. Believe it or not, the swelling got much worse. I kept thinking "Eden and Zach are coming and THIS happens?"
